Tokyo-Hokkaido // día 4
Tras pasar la noche durmiendo en el ferry, Hokkaido nos recibió con un día gris y lluvioso que no hacía presagiar nada bueno. No era un día especialmente frío, aunque estabamos algo atenazados ante la posible perspectiva de que el tiempo no cambiase durante los días que viajásemos por la isla. Salimos del puerto de Tomakomai por la carretera 276 en dirección al Parque Nacional Shikotsu-Toya , y aún bajo la lluvia tuvimos la primera toma de contacto con las carreteras de Hokkaido. Enormes y solitarias vías sin apenas curvas, bien pavimentadas y señalizadas, con carriles lo suficientemente anchos para permitir cómodos adelantamientos sin necesidad de invadir el carril en dirección contraria.
Debido a la pereza de la lluvia, pasamos bordeando el lago Shikotsuko sin pararnos a contemplar el que es el segundo lago más profundo de todo Japón y el cuarto en cuanto a la pureza de sus aguas. Cuando ya llevábamos unos 40 kilómetros recorridos, y tras pasar el túnel Takibue situado en lo alto de un pequeño puerto, David se quedó sin gasolina. Afortunadamente había una gasolinera cerca para repostar, y no hubo mayores complicaciones. Además, curiosamente al otro lado del túnel hacía un tiempo despejado con un sol que lentamente empezaba a calentar y a secar nuestras mojadas ropas. Fue también en esta carretera cuando nos cruzamos con los primeros moteros de la isla, que nos saludaron desde sus monturas como es costumbre en Hokkaido. Contagiados del buen rollo y la amabilidad de los moteros, decidimos ponernos a buscar algún sitio donde poder desayunar.
Al borde la carretera paramos en lo que parecía un pequeño y coqueto café llamado Aivalley, que resultó ser una especie de jazz-bar. Pese a ser todavía bastante pronto, la amable anciana nos invitóa entrar, y aunque sólo podía servirnos café o curry, optamos por tomarnos un reconfortante café que nos quitase la humedad de los huesos. Azorada quizás por ni si quiera poder ofrecernos algo de comer, entabló conversación con nosotros y nos sugirió la visita a un cercano onsen del que ella era clienta habitual. Tras llamar por teléfono al propietario y acordar un buen precio y que nos dejaran pasar pese a no estar todavía abierto al público, nos dirigimos a tomar un merecido baño para empezar, ahora sí, con buen bien nuestro periplo por Hokkaido. El onsen resultó pertencer a un albergue situado en una pequeña colina junto al río Nagarugawa en una zona con numerosos afloramientos de aguas termales y ryokan conocida como Kitayuzawa. Solos como estabamos, disfrutamos de las magníficas vistas desde el onsen, y recuperamos fuerzas sonrientes ante el buen tiempo que parecía por fin acompañarnos.
Tras un frugal aperitivo de konbini de un pequeño pueblo sacado de "Doctor en Alaska" nos dirigimos al lago Toyako. Fue ver el sol brillar con intensidad sobre las aguas cristalinas del lago -que a modo de foso bordea el peñón central llamado Nakashima-, y sin mediar palabra paramos en una pequeña zona de descanso de la carretera para bañarnos y disfrutar como niños tirándonos a las increiblemente claras aguas del lago, desde las alturas de un pequeño muelle. Nunca me había bañado en un lago de estas caracterísitcas, en donde la pureza de sus aguas caldeadas por el sol, hicieron de esta experiencia una de las mejores de toda nuestra estancia en Hokkaido.
Bordeando el lago, pasamos casi sin enterarnos si no llega a ser por las nubes blancas de azufre junto al Monte Usu, uno de los volcanes más activos de todo Japón, cuya última erupción fue en el año 2000. Tras parar a comer en el restaurante de un excelente mirador junto al lago, emprendimos el camino hacia Otaru, destino final de este primer día en Hokkaido. Durante el camino por pequeños puertos de montaña de la región Kutchan, en torno al volcán Yotei (1898m) y debido a obras en la carretera, nos encontramos con un tráfico denso que incluso formaba enormes caravanas. Momentos estos de gloria y felicidad por conducir una moto que te evite esta insufrible espera. Pasamos por pequeños ríos y lagos enclavados en la serranía, así como por una imponente presa sobre la que hicimos una pequeña parada para contemplar el paisaje.
Casi al anochecer llegamos a Otaru, y tras aparcar las motos dimos un paseo por esta pequeña ciudad famosa por su gran canal, y por sus bien conservados edificios. Era Otaru a principios del siglo XX un transitado puerto entre Hokkaido y el resto de Japón, debido en parte a su cercanía a Sapporo, y a un canal que favorecía las operaciones de carga y descarga. Hoy en día, aunque todavía conserva parte de su actividad portuaria, la ciudad se ha convertido en una atracción turística gracias a su conservado canal, y a la reforma de los antiguos almacenes portuarios en restaurantes, museos y tiendas. Su pequeño casco histórico, con edificios bien conservados, es en mi opinión el mejor sitio para hacerse una idea de como era la arquitectura y el ambiente del Japón del periodo Meiji. Una visita desde luego recomendable para todos aquellos que pasan por Sapporo.
Tras localizar en la guía una rider house cercana a Otaru llamada Wataridoritetsuya, nos dirigimos allí para pasar la noche. Cuando por fin la encontramos situada en la cima de una pequeña colina junto a la carretera, y vimos que no había nadie, estuvimos por un momento tentados a "okuparla". Menos mal que aunque tarde, conseguimos localizar por teléfono al dueño de la casa, y tras comprobar que seríamos los únicos huéspedes de la noche, nos fuimos a celebrar, de nuevo bajo una incipiente lluvia, nuestra llegada a Hokkaido con una cena típica de la tierra: cerveza Sapporo y jingiskan, una parrillada de finas lonchas de carne de cordero, preparada sobre una parrilla que recuerda al casco usado por Genghis Khan...

Apéndice.
Las rider house son unos alojamientos típicos de Hokkaido, que como su nombre indica son para moteros. Por lo general, constan de un dormitorio común en donde poder extender tu saco, y poco más, aunque las hay también más parecidas a albergues. Son opciones económicas donde poder pasar una noche a cubierto y conocer a otros moteros, o cuanto menos, obtener información sobre rutas, onsen cercanos o lugares de interés.

me encantó el relato. Estuve en Tokio en el año 78 y me resultó impactante la parte antigua y la locura de la contemporaneidad occidental de Japón. Tuve la suerte de ir a conocer los jardines imperiales y participar de la exquisita ceremonia del té.
